Quick start checklist
- Explore the farmhouse, farm shops, and town services before committing all of your money or materials.
- Buy or locate the basic farming tools you need, then clear only the Ghost Tentacles covering the crop spaces you plan to use.
- Till, plant, and water a manageable first plot; unwatered crops pause growth rather than advancing overnight.
- Keep task items, ore, bars, and unusual materials until you have checked their progression and crafting uses.
- Carry restorative food on longer mining, fishing, or combat trips and return home when your supplies are low.
- Use the detailed tool, fishing, combat, key, and location guides when a specific system becomes your next blocker.
First priorities
The farmhouse lets you save, bathe, sleep, cook, access storage, and watch the news. Learn those home functions, then visit the farm shops and the town instead of spending the opening entirely on one activity.
Farm plots begin covered by Ghost Tentacles. Cleansing Balm removes a tentacle so the tile can be prepared with a Gardening Hoe, planted, and watered. Opening a small maintainable plot preserves time and supplies for tasks and exploration.
Storage matters because crops, forage, ore, and crafted materials can feed several systems. Check a resource's task and crafting uses before selling the entire stack.
Food, health, sleep, and defeat
Bathing also refreshes monsters and mysteries, so it is more than a free heal. Treat it as a world-state decision. Sleep events and the automatic midnight transition are separate systems, which is why going to bed is not required simply to move the calendar forward.
| System | Verified beginner rule |
|---|---|
| Food | Cooked food can restore HP and MP; the amount depends on the item and food effects. |
| Bathing | The home bath fully restores HP and MP and clears most temporary blessings and curses. |
| Sleep | Sleeping is optional and can trigger random sleep events. |
| Midnight | The day changes at midnight whether or not the player sleeps. |
| Defeat | Reaching zero HP defeats the player; the reviewed official references do not establish one universal penalty for every difficulty and version. |
Early money
Harvested crops can be sold, gifted, cooked, or used in crafting. For income, compare seed cost, time to harvest, expected yield, and the crop's other uses before selling. A crop that supports a task or recipe may be more valuable to keep than its immediate sale price suggests.
Fishing provides another documented source of sellable catches, while mining supports tool and crafting progression. Use the Farming Income and Fishing guides for their verified details instead of treating one activity as universally best.
Tools and resource progression
Tools open resource loops rather than replacing them. Keep the ore, bars, wood, and task rewards needed for the next tool step, and follow the dedicated guide when the game asks for a specific item or route.
| When you are blocked by | Use this guide |
|---|---|
| Chopping and axe progression | Basic Axe |
| Mining, ore, and smelting | Pickaxe and Copper Bars |
| Rod use and fishing progression | Fishing |
| Old Woods material gathering | Old Woods and Spiritwood |
Combat and AP
Welcome to Elderfield uses turn-based combat. Prepare equipment, restorative supplies, and suitable skills before entering a hostile area. A multi-hit skill is not the same as receiving several independent turns, and an effect that can grant an action point is not guaranteed to do so.
Use Guard, healing, and resource management when they create more value than another immediate attack. The Combat and AP guide covers the documented stats, stack effects, multi-hit skills, and action-point mechanics.
Keys, gates, and travel
Keys and numeric passcodes belong to different lock systems. Do not spend a consumable key on the assumption that it replaces a keypad answer, and do not assume one key opens every gate.
Area travel also has separate progression checks. The Old Woods is reached through the northern Town Outskirts, while deeper paths, its mine, and bus stops have their own requirements. Use the Keys and Gates and Old Woods guides when a specific route is blocked.
Common beginner mistakes
- Clearing more farm tiles than you can plant and maintain, which spends Cleansing Balm without creating an immediate crop loop.
- Forgetting that an unwatered crop does not advance that night and that the day changes at midnight without sleep.
- Selling every ore, bar, crop, or unusual material before checking tasks, recipes, and tool requirements.
- Treating bathing as only a heal even though it also refreshes monsters and mysteries.
- Entering combat or a long resource route without food, equipment, or a planned way home.
- Following Demo-era or launch-era numbers without checking the current game and official reference.
Where to go next
Open Fishing for rod mechanics, Farming Income for crop planning, Combat and AP for turn economy, Keys and Gates for locked progression, Old Woods for the area's routes, or Romance for relationship planning. The Basic Axe and Pickaxe and Copper Bars guides cover the two early tool chains in more detail.
